AA Smartfuel is excited to be bringing some fun and excitement back into the community after the challenges of recent months.
Back by popular demand after a successful initial 10 day season, The Drive In is open on Friday 12 June and Saturday 13 June. Across this extended 2 day season, ASB Showgrounds will be home to New Zealand’s largest portable LED screen, playing an epic line up of recent releases and old classics.
AA Smartfuel’s Drive in Cinema is the best outdoor cinema experience for Kiwis to enjoy as they come out of lockdown.
The Drive In Cinema was initially designed to align with Level 2 restrictions.
These restrictions have been lifted however for safety reasons we still advise guests to follow these guidelines.
Everyone attending the event has given us their details for contact tracing.
Strict hygiene practices will be maintained by the food service teams and all other staff onsite.
BUYING TICKETS
All guests will be required to pre-purchase tickets via www.thedrivein.nz
TICKET COST
The cost for a car and 1 x person is $40.00 and then $7.50 for every guest thereafter.The cost for a car and 1 x person is $40.00 and then $7.50 for every guest thereafter.
AA SMARTFUEL DISCOUNT
AA Smartfuel cardholders and AA Members get $5 off the standard vehicle ticket price.
You must select the dedicated AA Smartfuel ticket option at the online checkout to receive the discount. Discount only applies once to each vehicle.

ON ARRIVAL
Gates open 1.15 hours prior to the screening to give you time to settle in and get ready for the film.
Enter through Gate 2, ASB Showgrounds, 217 Greenlane West
Either present your printed ticket or show the barcode on your phone at the gate to be scanned in, in a contactless entrance procedure.
AA Smartfuel ambassadors will direct you to a pre allocated parking space, where you will enjoy the Drive In experience from the comfort of your own vehicle.
WHAT TIME SHOULD I ARRIVE?
Gates open 1.00 hours before every screening.
5.00pm movies - Gates open 4.00pm
5.30pm movies - Gates open 4.30pm
9.00pm movies - Gates open 8.00pm
9.15pm movies - Gates open 8.15pm
Please arrive no later than 20 minutes before screening times
TOILETS
Bathrooms are located on site and will be monitored by a cleaner at all times.
FOOD & BEVERAGE
No cinema experience would be complete without treats.
There will be a range of food trucks on site offering delicious hot food.
Ben & Jerry's and other snacks will be available to order through the website, as well as hot coffee and tea.
HOW TO LISTEN TO THE FILM?
Just tune your car stereo into our FM Frequency for the best quality audio experience.
The Frequency is low down on the FM Bandwidth between 87 and 89
This frequency will be communicated to you on the big screen when you arrive at the event
RUBBISH
Please bring your own rubbish bags to dispose of your Drive In Cinema food rubbish at home.
YES! Our frequency is lower than 90. Allowing any import cars to tune in.
ARE THERE SUBTITLES?
We don’t have subtitles for every movie, but, if you would like to attend and need/prefer subtitles we will make it happen! Please let us know prior and we will make sure subtitles are available for your screening.
WILL MY BATTERY GO FLAT?
If you are worried about your battery going flat please make sure you turn on your car from time to time to give it a charge
HELP MY BATTERY IS FLAT!
We have AA Roadside Assistance on standby, staff will be onsite to assist
CAN I BRING MY PET IN MY CAR?
We love our fluffy friends but sadly they will need to stay at home.
CAN I WATCH THE MOVIE FROM THE BOOT OF MY CAR?
Yes, but please be considerate of other guests behind you. If you have your boot up - will you block other guests?
DO YOU ALLOW LARGER VEHICLES? WILL WE BE ABLE TO SEE?
We will allow vehicles such as vans, pick ups and SUV’s, but do note that for the interest of others you may be placed towards the back of the event. We want everyone to have a great experience. The screen will be raised, but it is important for all that they get to see the screen and stage as clearly as possible. If we ask you to move your vehicle and accommodate others, please do so in the interest of everyone having a fun evening.
CAN I SMOKE?
The AA Smartfuel Drive in Cinema is a smoke free zone
WILL THE EVENT GO AHEAD IF IT’S RAINING?
Our screen is awesome rain or shine. If it starts raining, you'll need to turn your wipers on and remember to turn your car on every now and then to preserve your battery.
WILL I BE ABLE TO SEE THE SCREEN?
We have the largest portable LED screen in NZ! We have made sure that no matter where you are you will get a great view! The first row is 15 metres back from the screen! We will advise all larger vehicles to be at the back to make sure everyone gets the best experience.
ALCOHOL
The site is not licensed so there will be no alcohol for sale and please - no BYO.
